Crete, the biggest of the Greek islands is located between the Sea of Crete and the Libyan Sea. It has four prefectures: Rethimno, Heraklion, Lasithi and Chania and around 650.000 inhabitants. This island is really worth visiting for its sunny beaches, blue sea, people’s hospitality, its culture and ancient traditions.

REASONS TO GO

Visit the Archaeological Site of Knossos - and its renowned palace, mark of the Minoan civilization 4000 years ago.

Walk down the Samaria Gorge from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea.

The old town of Chania, with an enchanting blend of Venetian, Turkish and Greek architecture.

ORIENTATION

The island has an extended form, spanning 260 km from east to west and 60 km at its widest.

This region has many contrasts - you can go from amazing beaches to inspiring mountains, from big (and disorganized) cities to extremely small picturesque villages; from very dry areas to very green zones like the springs in the centre.

Heraklion is the capital of Crete, it has a big urban centre and it is the economical centre of the island. It offers all the possible touristy facilities and activities and an exciting nightlife. Here you can visit many archaeological as well as beautiful churches. Chania is the largest and most important town of western Crete Greece and the capital of the western part.

Lassithi is a municipality which is part of the island of Crete Greece. It has many archaeological sites to visit as well as many beautiful caves and gorges

Rethymno is one of the main cities of Crete and one of the loveliest too. It is divided into Old Town and New Town. The old part of Rethymno is particularly apealing, full of old buildings and stone-paved narrow alleys. There is a huge Venetian fortress overlooking the city. An beautiful sandy beach and the impressive gorge of Kourtaliotiko are worth-visiting.

BEST TIME TO GO

The weather between June and October is perfect for you to visit the island and to enjoy the wonderful beaches.

HOW TO GET THERE

The island has three airports, Nikos Kazantzakis at Heraklion, Daskalogiannis Airport at Chania and a new one in Sitia.

There are also ferry services travelling from Athens (Piraeus) to Rethimno, Hania and Iraklion and also from Thessaloninki and the Cyclades to Heraklion.

TRAVELLING AROUND

Bus services are good and connect the most important tourist attraction of the island. However, the best option to explore Crete is to rent a car.
