Santiago is the biggest island of the archipelago. It belongs to the group of the Sotavento islands together with the islands of Brava, Fogo and Maio.
The volcanic origin of the island is easily perceptible in the two mountain ranges that extend along the island forming the island�s backbone: Pico d�Ant�nia.
Santiago has a varied and rich landscape with green valleys in the South, dry landscapes in Southwest, and long beaches in the North and Southeast of the island.

The greatest beaches are to be found in the Southeast and Northeast coasts of the island, like S�o Francisco and Ribeira da Barca. If you pretend to practice some water sports, Tarrafal is the place. Cidade Velha (the Old Town), the Fort of S�o Filipe are also worth visiting.
Praia is Cape Verde's capital and busiest town. The centre of town is located on a plateau overlooking the bay to the southeast.
BEST TIME TO GO
The island has sunshine almost all year round and a very pleasant weather. The 'rainy season' is from August to mid-October, although rainfall is still low.
A good time to visit is between April and July.
HOW TO GET THERE
The international airport of Praia has international and domestic flights are regular. Taxis are available from the airport to Praia town.
The port is located in the extreme North point of the bay of the city of Praia. The ferry boats connect frequently the islands of the archipelago.
Public transports assure regular daily connections between the city of Praia and Tarrafal.
Renting a jeep will allow you to better travel around on the island. Many car rental operators can be found in Praia.
